Hey Jody (I Wonder) | Military Cadence
(Lyrics & History)
The U.S. Military uses on chants called "Jodies" to keep troops moving in sync, lift their spirits, and strengthen teamwork during marches and runs. These chants are a valued part of military tradition.
Hey Jody is a cadence that follows an archetype, “Jody”, a fictional representation of a person who stays behind and becomes involved with a service member’s partner during their absence. The lyrics express a service member’s concerns and anxieties about fidelity and loyalty while away on duty.
Good old Jody. “He’s got your girl.”
Lyrics
Hey Jody
Why don’t you leave her alone?
Hey Jody
Stay away from my home
Before I break
Every bone
In your body
I wonder
How she’s doing now
I wonder
If she remembers her vow
As I work
All day
Toss and turn
All night
I wonder
Why don’t you leave her alone
Hey jody
Stay away from my home

Before I break
Every bone
In your body
I wonder
What she’s doing tonight
I wonder
If she’s holding him tight
As I work
All day
Toss and turn
All night
Hey Jody
Why don’t you leave her alone
Hey Jody
Stay away from my home
Before I break
Every bone
In your body
