Through all branches of the military, this staple of training is known to keep troops "in step," or marching/running perfectly in sync. In addition, it is common knowledge: there is nothing more motivating on a long ruck or run, than the voice of a soulful NCO (non-commissioned officer) calling a Jodie. While this cadence, "Mama Mama Can't You See" takes many different forms, it is best known within the Army as an eerie, dark marching cadence. This jody call tells the story of a soldier who was forever changed by his experiences. Cadence, also known as "Jody calls," is a long-standing tradition in the US Military that keeps troops marching and running in perfect sync (AKA in-step). Each marching cadence is set at a perfect 120 BPM, and each running cadence at 180 BPM. This allows troops to keep pace, and the soulful voice of a soldier on these long rucks or runs just gives you a burst of energy you didn't know was possible. The Steam Roller cadence is a staple in the Navy community. The cadence has gone viral several times, both on my account and others where NCOs called their heart out and even picked up remixes from civilian artists. This practice initiated by Private Willie Lee Duckworth in 1944, resulted in the development of "Jodies," "Jody calls," or "cadences," which have become a fundamental aspect of military culture. Although some cadences may have a controversial tone, often touching on themes of violence and war, they help to prepare young soldiers for the challenges they will face in combat. This cadence, "Interlude" as I call it, has been a staple for generations. It is less lyrical, and not meant to tell a story, as many cadences are. This cadence is more rhythmic in nature, focusing more on the left foot-right foot commands. The lyrics, "shoot him in the head, kill him!" live rent free in the heads of veterans everywhere. This "work song" style, also referred to as "Jody calls," has been a long-standing tradition in the US Military. These call-and-response style chants help troops march and run "in-step," or in sync, with each cadence set at a precise 120 BPM for marching and 180 BPM for running. The soulful voice of a troop leading these cadences during long rucks or runs is sometimes exactly the pick-me-up you need. The Steam Roller cadence is a staple in the Army community. These cadences hold a rich and significant place in military tradition . Down by the River is a traditional military cadence which plays on the age-old tradition of crap-talk. These lyrics describe a fictional encounter where Soldiers confront an enemy by the river resulting in a stand-off. This fight ends with the enemy being thrown into the river. The word “enemy” has often been swapped for words like “commie,” “China,” or even the names of competing Platoons or branches, all for the purpose of building comradery and fueling Soldiers’ competitive spirits. Originating with PVT Willie Lee Duckworth during WW2, the tradition of calling "cadences," or Jodies has become a staple in military bootcamps, schools, and PT. With a tempo of 120 BPM or 180 BPM on runs, cadences offer a steady, predictable pace. This pace not only helps to reinforce unit cohesion and morale, but also has the very practical applications of keeping troops "in-step" with one another and keeping their breathing regulated and steady. Over the years, cadences have adapted to adopt a startling and occasionally controversial tone. The aggressive nature of certain cadences has been utilized to mentally equip new trainees for the harsh realities of their roles. Other cadences, however tend to focus on the humorous portions of military-life. This Jody, "My Way or the Highway" tells the story of a very motivated recruit being reminded of his rank.
