- My Mission | Army Cadences | Jonathan Michael Fleming
Preserve the legacy of military cadences, connecting veterans to powerful memories through archived songs. Discover the history, inspiration, and resources for cadences while supporting veterans in need. My Mission Preserve History Military cadences (AKA call-and-response, marching songs, Jodies, Jody calls) have been an integral part of US military drill and ceremony since World War 2. These songs have been handed down, generation-to-generation for decades, with lyrics often changing from unit-to-unit. My goal is to document and preserve this history in audible and written form so that they are not lost with future generations. Click here to learn about the history of cadence and how this mission started. Inspire, Motivate Veterans Every day, I get messages, emails, and letters requesting certain cadences be recorded; some of these jodies being much older than I am. I quickly realized why: music has a powerful effect on the mind. Many veterans have not heard these songs since their service; maybe even since bootcamp. Hearing cadences again for the first time in years takes them back to "day zero." They are reminded of the motivation, passion, and drive they had for their service. Since I started, I have received countless messages describing the fire that was re-kindled, stories of immense weight loss, and a renewed appreciation for their time in service. My prayer is that many more of our troops are touched by the memories brought back to them. Go back home for links to all the cadences, or go to the shop page to find CDs. Be a Resource When I entered AIT (tech school/MOS school) I googled "Army Cadences." I was hoping to find some new (or old) material to introduce to my platoon. To my surprise, there were no recordings of many of my favorite jodies. With the exception of some rare field recordings, it was very difficult to find any, and I was left out of luck. I later met Soldiers who had the same complaint - one particular buddy was going through BLC (our Basic Leadership Course for NCOs) where he was required to be able to lead troops in marches. He expressed the need for a cadence resource - somewhere he could turn to not only read lyrics, but hear cadences that he could introduce to his unit (they were quite burned out from the handful of cadences that they called on repeat). A few years later and I'm happy to say that I get reports of my YouTube channel being used all across the Army (Drill Sergeant school, BLC, etc.) to teach our leaders great cadence. I work as an ambassador for homeless veterans through a major U.S. Nonprofit, with the goal of eradicating veteran homelessness in the coming decades. As a regular volunteer and financial contributor, my hope and prayer is that my platform will serve as an effective way to both raise awareness and raise funds for the work being done for our veteran community. - Steam Roller (Army) - Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
I’m a steam roller baby And I’m rolling down the line I’m a steam roller baby And I’m rolling down the line So you better get out of my way now Before I roll all over you I’m a jackhammer baby And I’m hammering down the line I’m a jackhammer baby And I’m hammering down the line So you better get out of my way now Before I hammer all over you Before I roll... Steam Roller (Army Version) | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Adding cadence to your workout routine can bring a different level of motivation and discipline. This "work song" style, also referred to as "Jody calls," has been a long-standing tradition in the US Military. These call-and-response style chants help troops march and run "in-step," or in sync, with each cadence set at a precise 120 BPM for marching and 180 BPM for running. The soulful voice of a troop leading these cadences during long rucks or runs is sometimes exactly the pick-me-up you need. The Steam Roller cadence is a staple in the Army community. The cadence has gone viral several times, both on my account and others where NCOs called their heart out and even picked up remixes from civilian artists. - History of Military Cadences | Jonathan Michael Fleming
Discover the story of military cadences, born from PVT Willie Lee Duckworth's WWII song "Sound Off." Explore how this morale-boosting tradition has shaped U.S. military culture and inspired generations. Jonathan Michael Fleming has recorded more than 50 US military cadences. How We Got Here The Full Story Cadences originated with PVT Willie Lee Duckworth during WWII. His story has turned to legend and is still alive in the US military today. Duckworth, a black Soldier and a descendent of freed American slaves, took the call-and-response style of "work songs" and wrote his famous tune, "Sound Off." This new-found method of morale-building would quickly spread across the Army, and make its mark in its history. Hundreds of cadences have since been written and taken root in US military culture. Segregated Troops marching while they sing in formation. Photo courtesy U.S. Army Documenting History I did BCT (Basic Combat Training) in 2021, where I was first introduced to the idea of cadences. A musician myself, the idea of a military unit using music to motivate troops, or simply get them through a run was fascinating to me. However, I only called cadence once in BCT - and that was after our graduation. Fast forward to MOS school, AIT (Advanced Individual Training). We marched many miles across several weeks, and I wore my voice out calling cadence. There was nothing like it. However, we quickly began to turn into the local radio station nobody wants to hear, due to their incredible ability to play the same songs on loop 24/7. We were running out of material. I turned to YouTube, like every good Gen-Z soldier, and was amazed at how little I found. Remember, this was before military cadences went viral, accruing hundreds of millions of views across the military and civilian community. At this time, there was very little to be found by way of recordings, and sometimes you couldn't even find lyrics to the jodies we'd marched to for decades. You truly had to have been there to understand the tradition. I made the decision that day, that when I returned home, I would record these cadences and share them with my family. Veteran's Day came around, and upon hearing a chilling speech by one of my NCOs, I spent some time reflecting on the time-honored traditions I was adhering to. I also began thinking about how many souls had worn the uniform before me, and how many will make the sacrifices necessary for me to continue living the life of opportunity I've been afforded in this great nation. Inspired by an old cadence my buddy found called "Down in the Battlefield," I pulled out my notepad, and in 5 short minutes I wrote the cadence, "Fallen Soldiers." This cadence took the world by storm, and quickly brought me comments, messages, emails, and letters from service members and veterans asking me to record other cadences. This is when it all came together for me: I can be a resource for service members, military schools, and veterans. All of those things are amazing, and I'm honored to be a part of our history - but that was only the beginning. Since the release of Fallen Soldiers, I've recorded, by request of present and former military personnel, 50 military cadences/jodies. My hope and prayer is that these songs surface memories for service members, remind them of their "day zero" motivation, and bring back their fire. Through a fast-expanding social media presence, we have been able to use these songs to bring awareness and raise money for veteran-focused nonprofits, and I believe that God has a bright future in store for the direction of this mission. My continued prayer is that you, whoever is reading this, is inspired by something you see. If that is all I accomplish, then I will be proud to have been a part of your story in that way. Hi, Ho, Lock and Load The engines are running, we’re ready to roll Kill the enemy, take control So early, so early, so early in the morning Abrams on the hill Take commander’s ready to kill Give the order, “Fire at will” So early, so early, so early in the morning Sniper on the ground Moving by without a sound Locks and loads a single round So early, so... Hi Ho Lock and Load | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Marching in cadence with call-and-response "Jody calls" is a long-standing tradition in the US Military. The custom began in WW2 when PVT Willie Duckworth brought the African "work song" style to his brothers in the Army. Cadences or "jodies" are still used across all branches of the US military to keep troops marching in perfect unison, or "in step." It's no secret that the soulful voice of an NCO calling a Jodie is all that keeps you going on brutal rucks or runs. Within the military, each branch, and even each MOS (military occupational specialty) have their own specialized cadences, and arguably, the best of them stem from the good old infantry. These grunts are a bunch of singing psychopaths. "Hi Ho Lock and Load" is one of the more tame cadences you'll hear out of these guys... - Hail O' Infantry - Military Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
O’hail, O’, O’hail, O’, O’hail, O’hail, O’infantry Queen of battle follow me Where nothing in this world is free Should have joined the infantry Early at night... Hail O' Infantry | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) The United States Military has a longstanding tradition of marching to call-and-response songs, known as cadences or Jodies, which are led by a troop leader, Drill Sergeant, or Instructor. This practice, initiated by PVT Willie Lee Duckworth during World War II, is vital in boot camps, leadership schools, and physical training. Since 1944, cadences have been utilized with tempos of 120 BPM for marching and 180 BPM for running, providing a steady rhythm that fosters unit cohesion and boosts morale. Additionally, they help troops synchronize their movements and manage their breathing effectively. Cadences have evolved to adopt a striking and provocative tone, preparing new recruits for challenges in their duties and combat. "Hail O' Infantry" highlights the grunts who win wars. And let's face it: The Infantry just has the best cadences. Lyrics Oh Hail o’, hail o’ Infantry Queen of battle follow me Where nothing in this world is free Should have joined the infantry Early at night in drizzling rain I am hit but feel no pain For in my heart I have no fear For I know my God is here Oh Hail o’ (Hey!), oh hail o’ (Hey!), oh hail, oh hail o’ Infantry (Oh Hail o’, oh hail o’, oh hail, oh hail o’ Infantry!) - Cadence Lyrics - You Won't Believe What I've Seen
You won’t believe what I’ve seen In the army You won’t believe what I’ve seen In the army Tan boots ACUs Taliban Hot sand Mortar rounds Hit the ground IEDs In the streets Soldiers Soldiers They keep rolling along You won’t believe what I’ve seen In the army You won’t believe what I’ve seen In the army You won’t believe what I’ve seen In the army You... You Won't Believe What I've Seen | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Military culture has been incorporating marching cadences since World War II, and earlier with other forms of marching songs. These cadences, set at 120 BPM, help keep troops marching in perfect unison. Over the years, countless cadences, also known as "Jodies" or "Jody calls," have been used across all branches of the US military. However, only a few, such as "You Won't Believe What I've Seen" left such a lasting impact on me. This particular cadence was introduced to me by a particularly war-hardened NCO. I wish I could tell you I heard it first in the cold of night, on a long ruck march when I nearly had nothing left. However, he called the cadence at 1700 hours, in the sunlight, after a very inconsequential day of monotonous heavy equipment training. Even in these conditions, knowing the background of the Soldier, his soulful cry of the cadence sent chills down my arm. The cadence is simple: The soldier simply lists all the things he's witnessed and experienced that left a lasting impact on him. Evident by the eerie melody, the unknown writer of this cadence was sure that he would never be the same upon returning home. Alright, here it is: "You Won't Believe What I've Seen." - Yogi Bear- Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
On a bright and sunny day Two little bears came out to play Gathered up all their money Bought themselves a jar of honey Yogi Bear| Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) The U.S. Military uses call-and-response chants called "Jodies" to keep troops in step, lift their spirits, and bring them together during marches and runs. These chants are an important part of military tradition . This cadence, Yogi Bear takes a humorous narrative involving characters from a classic cartoon series, but the storyline is significantly different from the original content. It shows the conflict between two bears which leads to a violent end. Lyrics On a bright and sunny day Two little bears came out to play Gathered up all their money Bought themselves a jar of honey But the fat one ate it all Pushed the little one, watched him fall Now the fat one’s on the run ‘Cause the little one, ‘cause the little one, ‘cause the little one’s got a gun Yogi bear is dead Boo-Boo shot him in the head Yogi bear is dead Boo-Boo shot him in the head Ranger Rick stood on a hill Ranger Rick, he saw the kill Now the ranger’s on the run ‘Cause the little one, ‘cause the little one, ‘cause the little one’s got a gun Ranger Rick is dead Boo-Boo shot him in the head Ranger-Rick is dead Boo Boo shot him in the head Related Products Signed Copies Quick View Cadences Vol. 1, 2, 3, & 4 Bundle (CDs) - AUTOGRAPHED Regular Price $64.99 Sale Price $59.99 New Granny Merch Quick View "When My Granny Was 91" - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View "When My Granny Was 91" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Fallen Soldiers Merch Quick View Fallen Soldiers - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 Quick View "Fallen Soldiers" Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View JMF "Dad Hat" - Camo Pattern with JMF USA Flag Patch Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View “What a Way to Die" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Gun/Bear Merch Quick View Right to "Bear" Arms - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 New Gun/Bear Merch Quick View Right to "Bear" Arms - Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View "1776 Problems" - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 New Patriotic Merch Quick View "1776 Problems" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View “I Left My Home" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View "Sound Off" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View "Keep Marching" - Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $27.49 New Merch Quick View "Stars Spangled and Enemies Mangled" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View Cadences Volume 1 (CD) Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $24.99 Listen to this cadence: Song Name: Yogi bear Album Name: Cadences Volume 2 by Jonathan Michael Fleming DISCLAIMERS: The lyrics and music to the above cadence are not original to me. - Steam Roller (Navy) - Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
I’m a steam roller baby Just a’ rolling down the line I’m a steam roller baby Just a’rolling down the line So you better get out of my way now Before I roll all over you It takes a little, a little, a little rock and roll It’s the kind that, the kind that, the kind that soothes your soul Cause I’m a U.S. Navy Sailor Just’a marching down the line I’m... Steam Roller (Navy Version) | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Introducing cadence into your workout routine can add a new level of motivation and discipline. Cadence, also known as "Jody calls," is a long-standing tradition in the US Military that keeps troops marching and running in perfect sync (AKA in-step). Each marching cadence is set at a perfect 120 BPM, and each running cadence at 180 BPM. This allows troops to keep pace, and the soulful voice of a soldier on these long rucks or runs just gives you a burst of energy you didn't know was possible. The Steam Roller cadence is a staple in the Navy community. The cadence has gone viral several times, both on my account and others where NCOs called their heart out and even picked up remixes from civilian artists. Here it is: "Steam Roller (Navy Version) Lyrics I’m a steam roller baby Just a’ rolling down the line I’m a steam roller baby Just a’rolling down the line So you better get out of my way now Before I roll all over you It takes a little, a little, a little rock and roll It’s the kind that, the kind that, the kind that soothes your soul Related Products Signed Copies Quick View Cadences Vol. 1, 2, 3, & 4 Bundle (CDs) - AUTOGRAPHED Regular Price $64.99 Sale Price $59.99 New Fallen Soldiers Merch Quick View Fallen Soldiers - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 Quick View "Fallen Soldiers" Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Gun/Bear Merch Quick View Right to "Bear" Arms - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 New Gun/Bear Merch Quick View Right to "Bear" Arms - Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View Cadences Volume 1 (CD) Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $24.99 Quick View JMF "Dad Hat" - Camo Pattern with JMF USA Flag Patch Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View Cadences Volume 4 (CD) Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $24.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View “What a Way to Die" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Patriotic Merch Quick View "1776 Problems" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View “I Left My Home" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Quick View "Keep Marching" - Blended T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $27.49 Quick View "1776 Problems" - JMF Hooded Sweatshirt Regular Price $59.99 Sale Price $54.99 Quick View Cadences Volume 2 (CD) Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $24.99 Quick View Cadences Volume 3 (CD) Regular Price $29.99 Sale Price $24.99 New Cadence Merch Quick View "Sound Off" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Cause I’m a U.S. Navy Sailor Just’a marching down the line I’m a U.S. Navy Sailor Just’a marching down the line So you better get out of my way now Before I march all over you Before I roll all over you It takes a little, a little, a little rock and roll It’s the kind that, the kind that, the kind that soothes your soul ‘Cause I’m a U.S. Navy Sailor I’m a steam roller baby And I’m rolling down the line Listen to this cadence: Song Name: Steam Roller (Navy Version) Album Name: Cadences Volume 1 by Jonathan Michael Fleming DISCLAIMERS: The lyrics and music to the above cadence are not original to me. - About JMF | Jonathan Michael Fle
Hello If you're reading this, thank you! I mean that - the fact that the military community has fully embraced my mission with genuine curiosity and support is an encouragement to me. I receive many messages, comments, emails, etc. asking for a greater context as to what led me to this project. I'd like to answer some of my most asked questions and hopefully add perspective to the importance of this history-preservation project. My Story Let me make one thing clear, on top of the disclaimer at the bottom of the page: when I reference my military service, it is purely for context. Please do not make any purchases, comments, views, or show any other type of support because of my military service. If you do those things, let it be because you support the mission behind my work, and truly enjoy my content! With that out of the way, let's start from the beginning: Houston, TX I grew up in Texas, in a large family: I am one of nine children. Before you ask, no... I'm not Mormon.
